We still have the music but what about those 90’s venues that contained our teenage spirit?
The Belgard Inn
Who recalls Nirvana’s ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’ lifting the Old Belgard Inn up in rapturous song at 1am, or the tomfoolery of those carefree nights? Tallaght teens, queuing to gain entry, with their ‘Rachel’ haircuts at the mercy of the elements. Cascadas ‘Everytime We Touch’ bellowing out into the night air from Lanigans late night disco bar. Or the unforgettable beat of Whigfield’s ‘Saturday Night’?
Opening its doors in 1991, Coco’s was another no brainer for weekend revelers in Tallaght and beyond. DJs enjoyed the celebrity life in and around the village. Early song requests were often made if you spotted a friendly DJ in Quinnsworth. At that time Youtube was another 15 years wait and Spotify… well add another 3.
Then the legendary BarCode nightclub on Clontarf Road, with its swimming pool and in-house arcade. Those ‘Flatliner’ shots doing exactly what they said on the tin. Aslan’s ‘Crazy World’ bringing us together amid bursts of dry ice, all the while promising our friends that we would never grow old.
Christy Dignam (Aslan)
Do you know that Coco’s is now a Lidl? Chances are you may see the old crew down the lemonade aisle occasionally. Oasis knew the score ‘Well don’t look back in anger, I heard you say. At least not today.’
